How much money have people made from online “act

How much money have people made from online “activations” in the last couple of years?

I’m not saying they’re not real - I just struggle to see how somebody with hardly any, or no training, can “activate” you through a computer screen in a matter of minutes.

I’m not saying it’s not possible - but indigenous shamans and healers go through years and years of training with community support with thousands of years of tradition behind them, but Western healers can flick on their healing power whenever they decide?

Not saying I’m correct - I’m wrong about lots of things - but is it *highly likely* that *a lot* of Instagram transmissions through phone screens are a load of bollocks?

It seems to me to be the spiritual version of the dangling capitalist carrot that says “you can do and be whatever you want”.

I’m just asking questions - something I feel we need to consistently do in regards to western spirituality. But it reminds me of another problem which is intuitive healing. Personal belief and natural ability just aren’t a substitute for long term training.

The problem with intuition is that if it’s not based on very firm foundations of mundane and repetitive training then it is made up of your existing bias, belief and personal experience up until that point.

Your gut feeling is okay when it’s only you involved, but going with your “gut feeling” when somebody has been ripped apart by trauma without an entire toolbox of technique to back it up is just irresponsible.

Intuition plays an amazing part in healing once you’ve been able to separate from your own biases within a healing capacity, but not before. This takes time.

Even if *some* Instagram transmissions are real - questions to ask are:

Where is the control?

What container are you opening and not closing?

What are you opening up in people you’ve never even looked in the eye?

What offerings are being made?

What are you helping people to release without filling that space with something nourishing?

What exactly are you activating? And how can you be sure that it is loving?

What happens to all these people you have now activated?

Every action, even positive - have consequence.

Somebody asked a question about dogma, and if there is a place for criticism within shamanic cultures. It’s a great question.

In traditional cultures I have experienced there doesn’t seem to be much room for questioning because they are thousands of years old already and the way is “the way”. They’ve figured out what works and what doesn’t in the context of their culture and - if anything - there is less room for criticism because they’re working so hard in protecting their traditions.

It’s totally different here. We HAVE to criticise. It’s a good thing. We should be cynical and we should be very wary of Western spirituality and we should have our bullshit detectors fully charged. There is no other way to truly find out what works and what doesn’t if we don’t consistently question spiritual narratives.

Each culture is different. I’m wary of people copy and pasting other traditions into Western culture, because the ceremonies are only one small part. We lack the locality, the language, the context and mythology of these cultures, so the tradition cannot work here in the same way.

We can find wonderful healing in experiencing other cultures, but in terms of birthing our own culture we need to be authentic to the everyday lives of the majority of those who live in the West.

I think that’s done by stripping things back to the bare bones of spiritual/shamanic practice and then through trial and error find out what works for us, on this land and in the context to the Western everyday.

Big job. It’s going to take generations. But it would have done in the first place for every culture. We have to be patient and curious, and brave enough to try things that might not work.

When we sit and think that we should be more this

When we sit and think that we should be more this or less that - we risk running from finding stillness as we are.

I sat on a bench near a stream last night after I gave it some offerings. In the darkness I closed my eyes, sat up straight and took a breath.

A voice sounded in my head:

“You’d be getting much more out of this if you didn’t drink so much over Christmas”

“Why didn’t you bring more offerings?”

“You played Xbox last night, you should have been drumming”

“Did you really need to have that argument earlier?”

Essentially - Be more. Be better. This moment isn’t enough. It could be more. You could be more. The usual.

While there is a place for commitment.

What more did I need out that moment?

What expectation did I place on that moment beyond giving offerings and sitting on a bench?

Was a water goddess going to climb out of the river and tap me on the shoulder if I had one less Guinness on NYE? Probably not.

This voice is clever. Not only does it fuel me when I am running from meaning, it prevents me from experiencing the reality of the moment.

I spent the entire time sitting on that bench thinking how good it would be if I was different, rather then just enjoying sitting on the bloody bench!

You’ve got to laugh. Trying so hard to be holy that all you do is concentrate on why you aren’t.

Lesson - prepare well. But in the absence of preparation - shut the fuck up and enjoy it.
