One of the great things that I have experienced within shamanism is that you can be whoever you want to be, and there is no pressure to be any other way.

This is usually something that is embodied from the shaman who is running the ceremony in traditional culture. They are often the first to act out, be silly, and make a fool of themselves.

I had come from a new age background, where the person holding the ceremony had to seem to be the one who had it most together and was the most enlightened in the room. To me it was always so stuffy, and I felt like I couldn’t relax, because inside I was full of intrusive thoughts. I was suppressing my wild nature, trying to be peaceful and calm. At some point I realised - we’re all trying to do the same fucking thing here and it isn’t working.

I’ve been in traditional ceremonies where the medicine man and his partner split up half way through the night. I’ve been in traditional ceremony where the shaman just walked off. I’ve been in traditional ceremony where at the end the shaman asked where they could get a whore or where they could get a bull to sacrifice.

This was a little shocking at first. But what they are doing is actually very clever. Throughout ceremony, there is a huge amount of projection that gets layered upon the shaman - especially in the West. That is no good for a person, and in traditional society a way to break that projection is to shock. So through working healing miracles all night, they get to the morning, put down their feathers and “clock off” and make sure everyone knows just how fucked up they are as well!

The lesson - we are all human. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your flaws. Stop trying to be so holy.

I feel a little weird posting this but needs must.

I feel a little weird posting this but needs must.

I’m currently writing a book about where paganism/shamanism/animism still exists in modern life. Where the old ways still rear their heads in the mainstream and how shamanic practice can help us put ourselves back together in the modern world.

Part of the book centres around anonymous case studies. So… if my work has ever had an impact on you, whether that was a healing, a ceremony, or a retreat - and you wouldn’t mind your story being anonymously shared in a book to outline the above points.

I’ve never really connected with the idea that c

I’ve never really connected with the idea that certain spirit guides are related to specific things. Like when people do a journey to connect with one guide to find clarity on a specific issue.

An example would be “let’s all journey with the beaver to learn how to find motivation”.

It’s a nice idea, but did anyone ask the beaver? Who decided the beaver spirit was there to motivate us?

It’s weird, and nothing to do with shamanism really. It’s part of the New Age angel/animal card scene. People just make those up and decide what card means what. It’s basically Top Trumps with intention.

In my experience if a guide comes to you it means something specific to you and you only. The wolf might have a completely different message for you than to another person who also meets the wolf. By having pre-prescribed meanings in your mind you run the risk of entirely losing the actual message.

We’re not from a culture that has pre-prescribed meanings for spirits. In some native cultures the Thunderbird, for example, would mean you have certain abilities - but without being part of that culture it won’t mean the same for you, so it’s sort of useless. It’s important not to pick and choose parts of other cultures to fulfil our needs.

The best thing we can do is ask the guides that come to us directly. Your guides are yours. If you’ve met them, ask them, and stop using animal cards to find out 😂
